How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the body has a vital energy called “qi” that flows along pathways called meridians. When there’s a blockage or imbalance in the flow of qi, it causes illness or pain. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncturists aim to restore the balance of qi and promote the body’s natural healing processes.

The sensation of acupuncture varies from person to person. For many, the needles are so thin that the insertion is relatively painless, and oftentimes not even felt. You might feel a slight prick or a sensation of heaviness, tingling, or warmth at the insertion site. It’s rare for acupuncture to be described as outright painful.
The number of acupuncture sessions needed varies widely depending on the individual, the specific condition being treated, and how well the person responds to acupuncture. For acute issues, you might experience relief after just a few sessions. Chronic conditions, on the other hand, may require a more extended treatment plan. It is recommended that the initial series of sessions are close together, such as once or twice a week, to build up the effects. As symptoms improve, the frequency of sessions may decrease. Many people find that they benefit from maintenance and come in at least 1-2 times monthly.

Acupuncture varies from case to case.   Many factors contribute to the success rate of acupuncture that go beyond just the treatment itself, including what our patients do outside of clinic.  Factors such as exercise, diet, sleep habits, mindset, and toxicity exposure all play a role in how effectively someone heals and recovers from illness.  Fortunately, our team helps to educate and coach patients on ways to improve health and vitality.  Acupuncture itself has been used for thousands of years and has abundant clinical evidence of its effectiveness.  

While acupuncture and acupressure share a common foundation in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is more aligned with Western anatomical and physiological principles. In acupuncture, thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow and promote natural healing while in acupressure no needles are used and just pressure, usually applied with fingers and palms, is used to stimulate specific points. Acupuncture and acupressure have broader applications, including addressing issues beyond musculoskeletal problems, whereas dry needling is primarily used for targeting specific muscle-related pain and dysfunction.

Yes, children can undergo acupuncture, and it’s becoming more common for pediatric acupuncture to be used as a complementary or alternative therapy. Keep in mind the treatment approach for children might differ from that for adults. Some children may be more sensitive to needles than others. Acupuncturists working with children often use thinner needles and employ techniques that are gentle and less invasive. New Vibes treats patients 18 years old and up. We can refer you to a pediatric acupuncturist if needed.

Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing to an acupuncture session. This makes it easier for the acupuncturist to access the points on your body where the needles will be inserted. Many acupuncture points are located below the elbows and knees, so wearing shorts or sleeves that can be pushed up is often convenient. Remember that comfort is key, as you’ll be lying still during the treatment. It’s also a good idea to remove any jewelry or accessories that might interfere with the placement of needles or cause discomfort during the session.

Studies show that acupuncture has a positive impact on fertility by promoting blood flow to the reproductive organs, regulating hormones, and reducing stress. Acupuncture is commonly used as a supportive treatment alongside conventional fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Does fire cupping hurt?

Fire cupping has several potential benefits. Some of the most common are: pain alleviation, reduction of stress, the promotion of blood flow, improved circulation, detoxification of the body by promoting the flow of lymphatic fluid, relaxation of tense muscles, reduced muscle spasms, and balance to the body’s energy flow (qi. In contrast, Western herbal medicine draws from various traditions and emphasizes herbs for specific symptoms or supporting particular bodily functions. It may use single herbs or simpler combinations, often with a more scientific approach, considering the active constituents of herbs and their pharmacological effects.
The discoloration of the skin after fire cupping is often referred to as cupping marks or petechiae. This happens because the suction created by the cups draws blood to the surface of the skin, causing tiny blood vessels (capillaries) to break. The broken capillaries release small amounts of blood, and this can result in the characteristic circular marks that range in color from light pink to dark purple.
Generally, these marks tend to last anywhere from a few days to a week or more. The exact timeframe depends on factors such as the individual’s skin sensitivity, the intensity of suction applied during cupping, and the overall health of the person. The marks will start to fade as the body naturally reabsorbs the released blood.

A flammable substance, like alcohol, is placed inside a cup and it is set on fire. As soon as the fire goes out, the cup is placed upside down on a certain part of the body. The air inside the cup will then cool, and create a suction effect that causes the skin to rise, and blood to rush to the surface of the skin.
While fire cupping can be beneficial for many individuals, it may not be suitable for everyone. Here are some considerations: Skin Sensitivity: People with highly sensitive or fragile skin may experience more pronounced marks or discomfort. The intensity of suction can be adjusted, but it’s essential to communicate any concerns with the practitioner. Certain Medical Conditions: Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as skin conditions, blood disorders, or pregnancy, may need to avoid or approach cupping with caution. Medication Interactions: If you are taking medications, there is a possibility of interactions with cupping therapy. At the office of New Vibes Health & Acupuncture, our team is committed to providing you with the best possible care. Health insurance is a contract between you, your employer, and your insurance company, and we ask that you pay for treatment at the time of service since your coverage may or may not cover the cost of all the services we offer. However, we are happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company, and they may reimburse you directly.
