The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system response. Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors (CB1* & CB2**) in your nervous system.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most abundant component of the Cannabis sativa plant species. CBD is a safe, non-addictive naturally occurring compound. It’s one of over 100 phytocannabinoids that have been identified in cannabis and hemp plants. CBD is closely related to but distinctly different from THC which is also a phytocannabinoid for in the cannabis plant.
CBD unlike THC (which is the main component in cannabis) does not induce any psychoactive effects. It does not make you feel “high” or out of control, confused, or anxious. It actually has a calming and warming effect on the body. It interacts with the entire body’s receptors to keep your endocannabinoid system in balance.
So what’s the difference?
Surprisingly it comes down to the arrangement of 1 single atom. The molecular structure of THC binds directly with CB1 receptors and therefor creating signals to the brain which results in the psychoactive effects of “feeling high”. Since CBD does NOT bond directly with the CB1 Receptor it actually neutralizes the psychoactive effects of the THC.
What are the effects of CBD?
According to a 2013 review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD has been found to possess the following medical properties:
- Antiemetic – Reduces nausea and vomiting
- Anticonvulsant – Suppresses seizure activity
- Antipsychotic – Combats psychosis disorders
- Anti-depressant – Combats anxiety and depression disorders
- Anti-Tumoral – Combats tumor and cancer cells
- Antioxidant – Combats neurodegenerative disorders
- Anti-inflammatory – Combats inflammatory disorders
Why do we use CBD in our treatments?
Many of our patients come to us with 2 main concerns; pain and anxiety/depression CBD can help relieve pain and unlike opioid medications, CBD does not mask pain, it works with your bodies endocannabinoid system to combat pain and disease.
CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression – According to the World Health Organization, depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide, with anxiety disorders ranked 6th.
Our mission at New Vibes is to find relief for our patients by allowing the body to heal itself. What CBD do we use in our clinic?
We have done extensive research on CBD companies and we are 100% supporters of our two Colorado owned and operated companies, Color Up Therapeutics and Spirit of the Herbs. Both of these companies are passionate about the quality of their products and the environment in which their hemp plants are grown and the safety and procedure used in their local labs. We use CBD salves and oils in our treatment as well as carry retail products for sale. The product lines we carry range from 250mg – 1,000mg Daily Sublingual to CBD Elderberry Syrup to topical salves.
*CB1 Receptors are found in the regions of the brain responsible for memory, cognition, emotions, and motor skills.
**CB2 Receptors are found throughout the central nervous system and immune system
